A Supercell of Sound: a Listen to “Find New Relevance” by The Well Tempered
Somewhere between 80s Synthwave and New Wave and early 00s AFI lies The Well Tempered. Bouncy, angry, throbbing synths and in-your-face vocals carry “Find New Relevance.” There’s a perfect balance of nostalgic aesthetics and modern, fresh sounds over the course of the 8 track album. Angst, sadness, and joy all make appearances in the lyrics and instrumentation. Rich percussion makes the record danceable and catchy.
With synth-heavy bands, mixing is often an issue, especially when combining analog and digital devices on a track. The levels on “Find New Relevance” are balanced excellently. Each synth sound resonates in the mix and doesn’t overpower the vocals or drums whatsoever. The verb and grain on the vocals adds to the overall nostalgic vibe of the album. Glittering, twirling, buzzing, and cycling synth sounds lay a topographical foundation that is both listened to AND felt.
Overall, “Find New Relevance “ is a force to be reckoned with. Industrial and confrontational, it gets stuck in your head. One can listen to it over and over again and not get bored because of how dynamic the album is. If you’re a fan of 80s New Wave/Synthwave, Industrial, and Post-Punk music, then I would highly recommend you give this album a listen…or several.
