It’s folky. It’s country-y. It’s indie. It’s Americana. It’s “America,” the latest album from Family Vacation. It has a patient feel, and unfurls over 16 tracks into different sounds. It has goofy and serious moments and encapsulates a jocular youthfulness that’s fun to listen to. There are some great piano tones on the album and ambient moments that surprise the listener.

I have to admit at points that the mix, especially the vocal mix is flat and could use some depth and freshness. It would be nice to hear the band with a little less high end and a touch more low end. Plus, there are so many instruments going on and giving them all space would benefit the overall texture of the album. There are great instrumental tidbits all over the place and highlighting each one would make a fun album even more satisfying to listen to.

Because “America” is a long album with a bunch of tracks, the listener can find at least one song that they resonate with and enjoy jamming to. Fuzzy guitar and locked-in drums keep the album head-bobbable and it’s a great album to put on while working or cooking. It has a nice vibe. The album is also bookended well, starting in a place that’s a little more silly and open, and ending in a place that’s a touch more thoughtful and dreamy. “America” feels like it has a solid sonic narrative and carries itself well.
