5 Star is a supergroup made up of Krystin Erasmus, Slimy, Wheep, David Poole, and Sierra, and the track, “What We Had,” was produced by Readymade Utopia Productions and Wheep. The track is poppy, bright, a little bit retro, and is supported by a music video that channels cuteness and futuristic Japanese aesthetics.

Each verse on the song is performed by a different member of the group, and they all bring their own individual personalities to the song in a way that fits together well. The samples used in the song channel house and early 2000s pop music aesthetics, blending them together to make a fun, danceable bop. The highs twinkle and the lows are subby — this track is brilliantly suited to a club environment or bass-heavy over-ear headphones. My only criticism is that the track teeters a little bit between lo-fi chill beats and incredibly clean EDM style production in a few spots, but honestly, that’s not much of a criticism at all because the song as a whole is put together well.

My favorite tidbit in the track comes during Sierra’s verse. The beat changes up, with hollow percussive hits, glitchy synths, and punchy drums. It provides a refreshing bridge to the song and deeply satisfies the producer in me with its vast scope of textures.

5 Star is what happens when you take a bunch of brilliant people and let them express themselves. The song makes you want to get up off your couch and boogie, sing in the shower, or hit the club. It’s full of life and scratches that textural itch that so many look for in electronic music.

Give the music video a watch here! It’s visually pleasing, and your eyes will thank you:
