Dreaming on Downers: a Listen to “One More Before I Go” by Art
Sleepy, grungy, drifting — these are all words that describe Art’s single, “One More Before I Go.” Channeling a hit of psych rock, a hint of post punk, a hint of lofi, and blending it all together with rich guitar tones and fuzzy vocals, this song captures what it feels like to be drunk at the end of a party, staring up at the ceiling fan and feeling the calm and sadness rush over you. I wrote in my notes while listening that “One More Before I Go” is drunk-alone-in-your-room-core, and I stand by that, but in the best way possible.
The first thing I was struck by when listening to this track is how carefully the guitar tone was recorded. It has just a hint of string noise, the modulation is timed perfectly, and it slinks along perfectly with the vocals once they come in. There’s a nice, dizzying quality to the slowly-increased amount of delay on the vocals and guitar. The drums are crisp. The combined elements remind me of a blend of early Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, and Franz Ferdinand (their more brooding, moody tracks of course). “One More Before I Go” definitely has that blended analog/digital, heavily modulated but clean aesthetic of alternative rock recordings of the early/mid 2000s.
At the end of the track, there’s a bunch of delectable panning, a lazy (in a good way) synth, and surprising autotune that really takes the song out with a bang and caps it off for the listener. This single leads Art’s upcoming album “Ecstacy” and feels like either a wonderful finisher, or a transitory mid-album track. I’m excited to see where it lies in the album and I can’t wait to hear “Ecstasy” when it’s released.
