Existential Dreaming: a Review of @jayjaymattjay
Matthew Lesniak posts photography, videos, and collage art on his instagram under the moniker “jayjaymattjay.” Sex, death, and everything in between is fair game in his artistic eye — all shaped and laid upon a surrealistic pillow beneath the dreaming eye of the viewer. Lesniak juxtaposes images that elicit a visceral response in his collages, playing with contrast, saturation, and stark placement to pull the compositions together.
Lesniak plays with what is real and what is not. In his photography, he captures gritty moments. Rockers flinging their hair, freeway construction, winter skylines, and dusky scenery are interspersed between jarring cutouts of faces against bold flat backgrounds. Sea, space, and sensuality come together in unexpected ways and engage the eye fully.
