Feeling Hungry? a Listen to “Devour You” by The God Awful Small Affairs
The God Awful Small Affairs, hailing from Chicago, IL, are self-described as “femme fatale space rock” and live up to that description well. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them live and they craft a wall of sound that’s all at once confrontational and comforting. Every song is a storm and envelops the listener in lyrics that read like an epic poem and instrumentals that weave and bob through styles and shapes in a surprisingly effortless manner. The band is comprised of members Missy Preston, Mark Muniz, Bryan Ramirez, and Erik Lobo-Gilbert, and this four-piece can craft the sonic weight of a far larger ensemble both live and in the studio, yet manages to hold onto the intimacy of a single singer/songwriter.
“Devour You” is something both new and familiar. As an avid listener in my teens to very theatrical, lyrically heavy, loud bands like My Chemical Romance, Meg and Dia, Coheed and Cambria, and early Panic! at the Disco, the rapid-fire stylistic changes and the deeply narrative lyrics are reminiscent of a time in the early-mid 2000’s where it seemed that everyone in alternative music had a story to tell and wanted you to !!!pay attention!!!
