Fun Alternative Rock: a Listen to “King” by The Hustle
The Hustle, made up of Alex O’Malley, Tommy Hinds, Teddy Ansani, and Andrew Pridmore, deliver straight-shooting garage rock with classic rock influences on their album, “King.” With a sound that bears characteristics of bands like The Black Keys and The White Stripes, “King” boasts punchy grooves that get stuck in your head and in-your-face tone as well as lyrics that vacillate between silly and musing.
Bass tone on “King” is nice and funky, well rounded and stands out. I want to take a moment to compliment it because often in garage rock, the bass is completely buried in the mix, but it gets its chance it shine throughout. The vocals have garage-y grain and verb, and the guitars aren’t too upfront. The Hustle makes use of varied instrumentation, supplementing their sound with horns, woodwinds, keys, and backup vocalists.
Overall, “King” is a tasty garage rock album that feels fresh. There are many rock bands in Chicago and across the states, but The Hustle ensures a standout spot in the pantheon through intentional mixing and textural interplay.
