Lo-Fi Beats to Chill to 24/7?: a Listen to 7. Memories (In) (Prod. Shinji) by THEWORLDISTOOLOUD
I had two thoughts upon first listen to this track: One, “7. Memories” has the lo-fi beat aesthetic to a t, and it fits on one of the myriad playlists on YouTube and Soundcloud that people listen to while they’re studying, smoking, or crying. Two, THEWORLDISTOOLOUD is channeling Milo, one of my favorite rappers, on this track. With the slightly unemotional, level-headed, almost-spoken straight poetry, THEWORLDISTOOLOUD is doing relatable, intellectual rap.
The beat, produced by Shinji, is excellent. The bass is just as subby as you’d expect it to be, the hi-hats are crisp, the reverb is fizzy, and the melody has that wistful Studio Ghibli soundtrack feel. The vox is a touch too loud in the mix, and though it fits into the track a little better when listening on headphones, it hovers too high in monitors and laptop speakers. Marrying the vocals to the beat a little more would raise the level of this track and make it even better than it already is.
Wordplay and textural lyrics feature on “7. Memories” and it’s fun to listen to. I think that enunciating more and having a little more confidence behind the rapping, especially in the latter half of the track, would make this more of a bop and likely garner hundreds of plays on Soundcloud, where vibey, a e s t h e t i c raps are in high demand. Overall, this is a good track, and I would recommend you give it a listen.
