Right on Par: a Listen to Superpar’s Album
If you like guitar, this album is for you. An energetic, frenzied psych rock jam opens the album with full force. Packed with excellent guitar tone, punchy bass, and crisp drums, Superpar’s self-titled album is a rock powerhouse that leans heavily on catchy guitar riffs and a tight rhythm section to propel it.
Classically hard rock, the album feels both old and new. Listed in Superpar’s influences are Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers — I feel that these four bands encompass Superpar’s sound well. The tone is dialed in and there’s great attention paid to getting that wall of sound that is so characteristic of late 60s/early 70s style rock music. The vocals are a little low in the mix in general, but it’s forgivable with the great sound on the instrumentals.
I find the cover of “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” to be an interesting choice. Though any John Mayer song is a great opportunity to show off guitar technique and tone, it’s a little out of the vibe of jam heavy songs that come before and after. With vocals and gentle songs making up so little of the rest of the album, it feels a little out of place, though it is executed well.
Overall, this album is great for those who love classic rock and thick sound.
