Strength and Empowerment: a Listen to “Brave Woman” by Leah Shoshanah
In this turbulent time for reproductive rights in the United States (and around the world), there is no better time for an empowerment anthem about resilience in the face of struggle. “Brave Woman,” the new single from Leah Shoshanah is that anthem. Jazzy, catchy, and beautifully mixed, Shoshanah’s song is a reminder that we all must carry on in the face of adversity and never stop creating art, speaking out, and living for ourselves.
When I listened to “Brave Woman,” I immediately drew parallels to Fiona Apple and the tough female singer-songwriter powerhouses of the late 90s and early 2000s. Bolstered by clean, warm upright bass, crisp percussion, and sultry piano, Shoshanah’s strong alto voice saunters through with cool assurance and bluesy sweetness. The countermelody in the flute really drives in that late 90s aesthetic, and provides a twinkling upper register to the track.
“Brave Woman” is well rounded and carries a simple, but essential message. In the words of Leah Shoshanah herself, “The song is about resilience, it’s about knowing that all of the struggle has made you strong as f*ck. These crazy right wing hypocritical pro-lifers have another thing coming their way, the resistance of billions of strong women and womb possessing humans along with billions of allies.” Shoshanah has dealt with struggles of her own and has turned them into an impassioned song that is both a call to action and a remedy for those who have struggled as well.
“Brave Woman” will be available to stream digitally on Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes on May 24th. To watch the music video, visit www.leahshoshanah.com.
