If there were a perfect song to roadtrip to, “Want to Know” by Chicago indie/folk band Free Range would be it. Wunderkinds Sofia Jensen (lyrics, vox, guitar), Ian Hammond (guitar), Thomas Douglas (bass), and Jack McDermott (drums) have whipped up a twinkly, warm, contemplative tune that winds through verses like a mountain road. The fresh and sophisticated sound of the track belies just how young the members of Free Range are. Everything is polished and each element of the song lies in just the right place, from the soaring slide guitar, to the whirring organ, to the lush yet simple vocal harmonies.

The lyrics are dreamy, keeping one foot firmly on the ground and the other plunged into metaphor. Jensen’s voice has a gentle quality that pairs well with the glittering guitar tones. As one listens to “Want to Know,” they are enveloped in something both familiar and totally new — one might compare Free Range to Julien Baker or Pinegrove but the sound is also unique and not iterative of any other artist.

If this single is any indicator of what Free Range has in store for us, then the world better hold on tight because they have the makings of the next huge indie/folk act. For a band to balance intimacy and confrontation so artfully in a debut song is fantastic, and I can’t wait to hear what comes next for Free Range.
